One of the most sought-after characteristics in any home is natural light, and unless you are able and willing to knock down walls or enlarge existing windows, there is not much that can be done to improve a dark space. However, as I explore this issue within the styling module of my online course, there are recommendations that might help to bring light into a space.
THE CURTAINS
If the view outside the windows is not one to be ashamed of, open the curtains and let the light flood in, precious natural light. If privacy is an issue or the view is a unattractive, sheer fabrics will allow light in and at the same time add to privacy. White or light colours should be used in this instance.
THE LIGHT GLOBES
Choosing ‘cool light’ globes instead of yellow light will immediately lighten and brighten the room. This is a similar effect to the brightness of natural sunlight. However, I prefer to use the warmth of yellow light globes for table lamps and floor lamps, very cosy in the evening when the ceiling lights are off.
THE WALLS To paint the walls white or a very light colour is a trick many understand, to help the light bounce around, but did you know that yellow based colours, like cream for example, whilst they are great for their calming effect might also bring the vibe of a room down, great for bedrooms. A choice I prefer for rooms that need brightening is light and cool greys, which help keep the energy up and also add a strong contemporary feel to any room.
Other ways to create a sense of brightness indoors brings the attention to the style and design of furniture, artwork on the walls and the general décor and soft furnishing. Choosing metal finishes and glass surfaces in furniture and accessories is a subtle way to increase the sense of brightness in a room. These should be placed strategically within the room to bounce the natural light rather than using dark surfaces and furnishing that absorb light.
