I'm back from Salone Del Mobile 2022, the largest design fair in the world, in beautiful Milan. It's such an important place to go to for me because it's about understanding what's happening globally in the world of Design. There were over 2,000 exhibitors showing the latest materials, trends and finishes that ultimately will come through the industry as the materials and products that we will get to use in our own homes.
SaloneBagno (bathrooms) and EuroCucina (kitchens) are shown together every second year alternating with Euroluce (lighting) and Workplace (office solutions) whilst Furniture and Décor are on show at every Salone. My intention as I visit Milano Design Week is to discover what trends are happening globally and how they're going to be relevant and affect the Australian market.
Salone Del Mobile began in 1962. It began to promote Italian furniture but as it grew and grew it brought in furniture, decor and designer technology from around the globe to become the large international fair that it's known as now. As it grew it also spilled out from the main fair grounds to many locations of the city itself, into what is called Fuorisalone (outside the fair). For example, Brera is a beautiful looking part of the city any time of the year but it comes alive during Salone Del Mobile with amazing presentations in showrooms, alleys and inside many of the antique buildings. Via Durini never disappoints with his high-end showrooms and Tortona is an area I always love to visit because it's filled with emerging artists and conceptual makers of products that will eventually enter our homes. Salone Del Mobile (at the fair) and Fuorisalone (around the city) make the overall event that we know as Milano Design Week.
It's so exciting to be part of this international event and I definitely encourage any creative person to put a trip to Milano Design Week onto their diary... be prepared to see a lot, be prepared to be tired... you're going to walk and walk and walk, so wear good shoes, and enjoy immersing yourself in the world of design.
Rest assured that Milano Design Week is such a large collection of products and events that it's impossible to see them all. Watch the video below made of a selection of images and video snapshots I have quickly pulled out of the thousands I came back with, hoping to give you at least an idea of what this year's Milano Design Week felt like.
But there is more to Milan than just Design and Fashion - watch the short postcard-video below to get you started with what this city has to offer besides Fashion and Design ...
